A review of A Thousand Boy Kisses from a picky reader.
Synopsis
Rune is forced to move from Norway to the United States. He is unhappy about his new life until he meets his next door neighbour; Poppy. They quickly become great friends. Or so Rune thought...
Things take a turn when Rune has to leave Poppy behind, and their relationship is put to the test.
Thoughts
Heart-wrenching.
I am not a reader who easily loves or cries because of books. And this book ticked both those boxes. Not only that. It had me SOBBING 5 times! Even I was stunned at my own state. Like 'is this really happening?' The most I've cried about a book is once. Let alone 5 times!
People who have been through long distance, relationship heartbreaks, betrayals and deep love; this book should definitely hit you like a truck and make you sob.
The cover of this book is so pretty, too! It definitely deserves to be on all our bookshelves.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Lets talk characters.
Poppy's character was beautiful. Her love and appreciation for life made me re-assess my perspective on life. Despite facing death, this girl didn't view life any less beautifully. In fact, her love increased. Despite facing death, this girl didn't worry about herself. She worried about her loved ones.
If that doesn't say enough about her, I don't know what will. A pure soul.
Another aspect of Poppy that I really liked was that she nurtured Runes relationships rather than restricting them. For example, she caused Rune to realise that his little brother was suffering without his attention, that his father didn't mean to hurt him. Because of Poppy, Rune became a better brother, son, partner and person. And I think that's beautiful.
Rune; the most perfect book boy I've met. His love for Poppy is so pure and strong.
This book taught me that I cant and I wont settle for anything less than a love like Runes. Because love is selfless, protective, patient, gentle. Nothing less.
The only issue I had with Rune was his attempt of revenge at Poppy. The way he handled that conflict was immature and unfair. The fact that he hurt Poppy with Avery; the person Poppy told Rune she wasn't comfortable with. The fact that she shared a vulnerable feeling with him and he used it against her is so sad. At the same time, I understand his perspective. But I wish he would have apologised for it and promised to never handle a situation like that again.
Overall, a 5 star read!
